Today we celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. My oldest daughter and I had a very candid conversation about why MLK Day is a momentous holiday. Quite often, I have worried about how to answer certain questions. In my mind, I thought it would be a long time before I would have to delve too deep into our country’s history. This conversation was sped up because of the current racial climate. We discussed the march in Selma and Dr. King’s profound “I have a dream Speech.” Dr. King fought against racial injustice and for racial equality. I can’t imagine the courage it took for him to speak out knowing that he would be beaten and jailed. Today, my family and I will celebrate love, unity and courage. My family will meditate on how we can make a change in our community and in the lives of others. May we all strive to love our brethren a little more.
Happy MLK Day!
